Buying a new home is a huge step in anyone’s life, and goes far beyond just finding a house that both has the space and look you want. In fact, choosing a home in the right location could be even more important than the house itself. Homes may be adjusted to suit your needs, but if your chosen community doesn’t offer what you desire, that’s a much harder remedy to come by.

 If you’re in the market for buying a new house, there are some important things to consider. For the house itself, everyone has different ideas of their dream home. Even if you already have an idea of the perfect house in mind, keep reading to find out what should be top of your priority list.

1. Schools
Whether you have children or are planning for them in the future, the school district in which you reside should be a top priority. Giving children the best education possible is one of the best ways to start them out on the right path in life. To that end, choosing a home in a good school district is essential.

Whether you go with public or private education, check out the testing scores and facilities at the local schools. Schedule a visit to meet with the faculty or principal. These will give you a good idea of whether it will be a good fit for your family.

2. Daily Commute
Ah, the daily commute. The term “daily” should tip you off that this is an essential factor when deciding on a home. Whether you make use of public transportation or drive or bike, it’s a trip you’re going to be making often. For couples, if both partners work, choosing a home somewhere between their respective jobs is a convenient solution.

If driving to work simply isn’t an option, choosing a home in a location close to public transportation is a must. It’s also quite a perk if the commute doesn’t require lengthy routes or transfers.

3. Community
The community in which you live is very important. Having a reliable support network, neighbors you trust and a friendly environment make for a happy home. Try to find a community that is very inclusive, with different activities and community-building initiatives.

For smaller towns or suburbs, this can be as simple as researching town hall meetings, community block parties or yard sales, or even looking into local interest groups. If you have a hobby you’re passionate about, having a group of like-minded individuals makes the relocation process much easier. For larger cities or towns, the variety may be much larger, but check a few out and see if you feel welcome.

4. Local Amenities
How are the water and power companies in your area? Are they up to your standards, and at a reasonable price? How about local service businesses, such as locksmiths, plumbers and electricians? We all need them at some point, so it’s worth looking into local rates and reviews.

As for tax-payer services, you’ll want to take in to account the amount and quality of libraries, local parks, public pools, playgrounds, etc. Having opportunities for free, family-friendly recreation is very important. Look for well-maintained facilities and find out about any other fees or membership requirements.

5. Proximity to Family & Friends
Some people like to live very close to their families and friends, while others would rather put a little distance between them. Both are fine, but it’s something to consider.

If you’d rather be closer to family and friends, looking into neighborhoods that are easy to travel back and forth from is important. For young families or those looking to start a family, the support and help this provides is essential. However, it is a personal preference.

6. Proximity to Everything Else
Let’s say you found your dream home, but the library is on the other side of town, there are no playgrounds in the area, and the nearest grocery store is half an hour away. Sure, it may all be part of the same town or suburb, but if you prefer the solitary lifestyle, it’s downright inconvenient.

The major point of arranging these priorities is to consider just how much your location affects your life down the road. That half hour trip to the grocery store may not seem like a huge inconvenience, but much like finding a good school or situating yourself close to an inclusive, supportive community, adding ease to your daily life will make you much more satisfied with your choice of home.
